Breathing New Life into Discarded Technology
Many organizations discard computers when they need updates or repairs, even though the devices often still have years of life left. To reduce e-waste and make technology more accessible, we reached out to schools, companies, and institutions to collect discarded computers, assess and repair them, and then provide them to a local nonprofit at a fraction of the usual cost. During the pandemic, that nonprofit distributed the refurbished computers to its members, helping them stay connected, access services, and continue their education.
Opening Doors Through IT Training
A local nonprofit approached us to develop and teach an Information Technology course for individuals looking to start new careers. We chose to focus on CompTIA A+ certification, an industry-standard credential that helps open doors in the tech field. We created a hands-on curriculum, secured a venue, and recruited students eager to learn. Over the course of three completed classes, graduates went on to successfully find jobs in technology—demonstrating the power of accessible training to change lives.
Affordable Learning Tools for Students
During the pandemic, the sudden shift to online learning left many school-age children struggling to keep up with their studies. Drawing on our international experience, we identified a low-cost solution and partnered with nonprofits to introduce small, affordable computers preloaded with a complete K–12 curriculum. These devices gave students the ability to work at their own pace, review lessons through instructional videos, and stay engaged with their education at a time when many were falling behind. This approach helped bridge the digital divide and supported children’s academic success when it was needed most.
